I have a set of ukuleles that I allow students to check out; one of the students had a string break, and someone (either the student or the student's family) struggled to restring the ukulele. they tied the string together under the sound board (Enya with a pull-through bridge) to make it work!
I do let students know that if a strings breaks, they may be asked to pay for it--and have never actually followed through with that warning.
I contacted the family to let them know that it was okay--and that if it ever happened again, just to let me know so a different string could be put on.
