Since the end of the Second World War much of Europe has relied upon American and British military capacity for defence.
In the intervening seven decades, European nations have not had to bear the burden of large-scale military spending, and have seen their economies flourish and standard of living rise.
Now considering conflicts such as that in the Ukraine, and considering NATO’s reticence to confront Russia, calls are again being heard for European defence capability to be increased and a European army to be developed.
Does Europe feel betrayed? Does this bode well for the future?
