The UK government is considering a proposal that could ban the sale of high-powered e-bikes and e-motos — and if you ride anything electric on two wheels, this will affect you.
In this video, I break down a new proposal put forward by Labour MP Julie Minns, which aims to ban the sale and marketing of what are being called “monster e-bikes”, as well as conversion kits that can turn pedal bikes into illegal electric vehicles.
But are e-bikes really the problem?
I look at:
What the proposed UK e-bike ban actually includes
Why bikes like Sur-Rons, Talarias and other e-motos are being lumped into the same category
The impact this could have on riders.
Why enforcement, police shortages and urban crime are being ignored
How a simple registration system and affordable insurance could be a better solution
And whether banning sales actually makes UK streets any safer
High-powered electric bikes are already illegal to use on public roads unless they’re registered, insured and ridden with the correct licence — but this proposal could go much further, potentially making ownership itself illegal, even for private land use.
This video isn’t about defending dangerous riding.
It’s about calling out lazy policy, poor definitions, and the risk of punishing responsible riders while the real issues remain unsolved.
