The UK government is promising the country’s seaside towns greater control over their own futures, with calls for communities to have the power to “reimagine themselves” for the 21st century. Margate, on England’s southeast coast, is often held up as a model of how a traditional seaside resort can reinvent itself. Once known primarily for its beaches and tourism, the town has undergone a transformation as new businesses, artists and visitors have helped reshape its identity.
