2024 has been a remarkable year, and at UHN, we're filled with gratitude for our achievements and the foundations we've laid for the future. All in service of Team UHN, our learners, our scientists, our patients and families.
We kicked off this year by deepening our commitment to building A Healthier World through our new partnership with YouTube Health - delivering trusted medical information to Canadians, connecting them to our world-class experts and empowering them to take control of their health and their wellbeing. We were grateful to welcome West Park Healthcare Centre into the UHN family, enhancing the practice of seamless, integrated care, expanding our specialized therapeutic and rehabilitation programs and truly making us Canada's leading rehabilitation ecosystem. During our Week of Gratitude, we celebrated every member of TeamUHN, recognizing our extraordinary people who make possible the UHN mission of building A Healthier World. We also saw innovation and progress, including a major milestone at our Toronto Western Hospital, as we embarked on construction of our transformative new 15-storey surgical patient tower. This was only possible through an incredible investment of nearly $800 million from the Government of Ontario, and of course, the support of our UHN foundations and our generous philanthropic donors. As always, our core programs shone brightly with more record-breaking achievements, including another Canadian first in cancer care, the use of a PET scanner to treat patients with meningioma tumors, doing so more precisely, targeting and attacking tumor cells. Our UHN surgical team reached the 1,000th lung transplant via our very own innovation of the Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion technique. Medley, our own UHN pioneer technology that enables cutting edge remote patient monitoring for heart failure, expanded to Canadian communities as far away as James Bay and the whole Hudson Bay region. And, we celebrated five years since the implementation of UHN's Integrated Care Program, an innovation that is bringing acute care home. We showed Canadians that health care goes beyond hospital walls with the opening of UHN's Dunn House, Canada's first hospital-led prescribable housing model for frequent users of the health care system. Our Gattuso Social Medicine Team can now prescribe safe housing for up to 51 of our most vulnerable patients. You also elevated us on the global stage, with Toronto General Hospital rising to the no. 3 hospital in the annual Newsweek ranking of World's Best Hospitals. In addition, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre was ranked Canada's top specialized hospital and Toronto Western Hospital one of this nation's top ten hospitals. You reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to medical discovery and the critical importance of investing in basic research, with UHN being named for the 14th consecutive year Canada's No. 1 Research Hospital.
With bold resolve, we crafted a new strategic plan, setting our sights on the future, pioneering solutions designed to build on our legacy as health innovators and disruptors to solve health care's most intractable problems. The plan focuses on three major themes. Transformative experiences, solutions beyond boundaries and alignment for impact. UHN is a place of many partnerships. This year, one of our most important partnerships was with our colleagues at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. This grew from a joint commitment of recognizing that all patients and families need cutting-edge behavioral and mental health support, and all serious mental health consumers deserve access to the very best of biological medicine. To respond to the ever-changing health human resource needs, this year we continued to expand programming at UHN's Michener Institute of Education, launching the Michener Centre for Postgraduate Nursing Education. This strong investment for nurses coming into the system provides them with new professional skills while at the same time building UHN's capacity to recruit and retain these invaluable colleagues. And, late in the year, we began to deliver on that new strategic vision with the acquisition of 522 University Avenue, new space to help us grow UHN's world-class care and research. This building will focus on cancer, artificial intelligence and innovative education. Before we say goodbye 2024, it's crucial we acknowledge that none of these achievements would be possible without the people who champion our cause. That's our generous donors, support from our government partners and our foundations, and above all else, TeamUHN.
