A few months ago, I covered the story of Kimberly Stowe, a Jamaican-American sister who was serving as the principal of Heritage International School here in Uganda. This sister did something courageous—she stood up for Ugandans who were being discriminated against in their own country and called out the toxic management at the school. For that, she was fired, forced out of her home, and eventually deported, leaving her dogs and her belongings behind.
She tried to return through the Busia border to care for her sick dogs and reclaim her things, but despite having a valid visa, she’s being blocked for no legitimate reason. This is the kind of stuff that happens far too often in East Africa—where corruption and passive-aggressive gatekeeping hold us back and discourage the very people from the diaspora who want to help build the continent.
I’m asking the family to step up. I rarely ask for money, but this sister was unfairly mistreated for being a real Pan-Africanist. Let’s help her get what she needs to feed her dogs and get back on her feet. We need more people standing up for local talent and challenging the status quo, even when the ecosystem tries to shut us down.
