In the course “Sensing the Anthropocene,” UChicago College students stretched their senses beyond the classroom to create art by listening, touching, tasting and smelling human impact on the planet.
The course took students across Chicago to grapple with how our built urban environment has transformed the natural one. During a class trip to the Garden of the Phoenix in Jackson Park, students listened to the park’s soundscape. They then mapped the sounds they heard in daybooks—experimental final projects that combined creative writing with visual arts.
