From the sea to the stars 🚀 On Feb. 13, 2026, UC San Diego alumna and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir embarked on her second journey to the International Space Station, serving as spacecraft commander for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission.
Over the next eight months, Meir and her crewmates will live and work aboard the ISS, carrying out scientific investigations and testing new technologies to prepare humans for future missions to the moon and Mars, while advancing knowledge that benefits life on Earth.
The Crew-12 mission marks Meir’s second spaceflight, building on a lifelong dream she first realized in 2019. Along her path to NASA, she earned her PhD in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in 2009. Her research focused on the physiology of deep-diving animals in extreme environments and included several expeditions to Antarctica to study emperor penguins above and below the ice.
