uAvionix has been teasing an HSI adapter for IFR navigation for some time but it appeared in the flesh during this year's Sun 'n Fun airshow. The AV-HSI is an ARINC 429 adapter necessary for conveying vertical and lateral guidance from IFR GPS units and conventional VHF nav radios that use a digital connection to outboard indicators. (Meaning: Not old-style analog types, so it's finally time to retire your KX-155.) In addition, the new AV-HSI allows two AV-30s to be connected so that their key settings will sync between displays—items like heading and baro setting. The AV-HSI for Experimentals is available now for $595, a certified version is coming later in the year for $695.
