A really neat thing in Odyssey that I decided to over-analyze for fun.
Not gonna lie, I got WAY too excited when I first picked up on this. Such a small thing, but the fact that they programmed it to work with every tune in the game for many different sound effects is really nuts.
I'd love to know how they went about implementing this, or if there are other sound effects in the game I missed that do it. If anyone has any insight or other ideas, feel free to share!

I learned this tune a while back, and I simply can't stop playing it - it just sits so nicely on the instrument, which isn't always the case when you try to adapt pieces for solo jazz guitar! Didn't have to leave much out from the original, which was a solo electric piano piece.Earthbound/Mother - Snowman (Cool Cover)JalopesTL2021-12-18 | My take on one of the great melodies in gaming, as an old-school rock tune.
The spirit of the Christmas season had me in the mood to cover something winter-related, and with all of the Mother 3 covers I've been doing lately, naturally this song came to mind pretty quick. Certainly one of THE great melodies in VGM, and it fit very naturally with the style I was going for.The Beatles: Get Back - The Ultimate Review (feat. 8-bit Music Theory and Garrett Williamson)JalopesTL2021-12-05 | Myself, 8-bit Music Theory, and Garrett Williamson discuss the new 3-part documentary series "The Beatles: Get Back", directed by Peter Jackson, now streaming on Disney+.Lost Sword Citadel - Original Gameboy OSTJalopesTL2021-10-01 | A short, five-song soundtrack I composed for Lost Sword Citadel, a game developed by some friends and I for GBJAM 9. The video features both gameplay footage and MIDI display of each composition.
I've always wanted to compose music for a Gameboy-style game, so I was thrilled when my friends and I all committed to making a game for GBJAM 9, a Gameboy-themed game jam. I absolutely love the Gameboy soundchip, and working within those limitations is an insanely fun challenge (as is writing a short game's worth of music in only a handful of days!) I'm pretty happy with the end result overall, so I compiled all of the tunes I wrote for the game into one "suite", which is this video. I hope you enjoy it!

A chill, rockin' cover of one of my favorite Mother 3 tunes.
The last Mother 3 cover I did was super fun to make, so why not one more? My take on "Mind of a Thief" was inspired by Paul McCartney, so it seemed only fair that for this, I'd turn my attention to another Beatle, George Harrison, whose 1979 self-titled album really informed a lot of the vibe I was going for here. Lots of acoustic guitars, lots of really warm tones, lots of groove. Biggest challenge for this one was, honestly, performing comfortably in my budget DCMC suit!
The scene in which this song plays in Mother 3 is definitely among my favorite parts of the game - there's something so inherently sweet about it, and the tune is so beautifully structured and composed for it. Was extremely fun taking that structure and adapting it for the sort of pop/rock style I was trying to imitate.Elden Ring, If It Were a Retro Pixel Art Game (Original Music and Art)JalopesTL2021-06-27 | "I doubt you can even imagine it..."

Original idea for this came from listening to the first track on Paul McCartney's 1971 album Ram, "Too Many People" - I absolutely loved the acoustic guitar sound and how it really drove the rhythm of the tune, and I wanted to see if I could do something similar with a video game song. This one from Mother 3 immediately came to mind. Merged a few arrangement ideas from the McCartney tune with the melody and harmony of "Mind of a Thief", and voila! Just needed to make a quick purchase of a Lucas shirt to seal the deal for the video.
It's a relatively simple arrangement, but I'm really happy with the sound of this one. Was also the first time I played/recorded drums myself on a video, which was difficult but super satisfying. Still have a lot to learn and practice, but I'm getting there! How Mother 3s OST WorksJalopesTL2021-06-14 | A breakdown of one of the best songs on the Mother 3 OST, "Mind of a Thief", and how it exemplifies why Mother 3's OST is so special.
Picked up Bowser's Fury on a whim last weekend and was completely blown away by the OST - there's so much phenomenal music packed into such a small, dense package! This tune stood out to me immediately as one I knew I wanted to play. Was a good excuse to play a little straight-ahead jazz with a nice guitar-centric, stripped down arrangement. Couldn't resist throwing in a homage to Ellington/Strayhorn by adding a little "Take The A Train" to the middle, too, since it fits like a glove. Here's a great, vintage recording of Wes Montgomery that served as inspiration: youtube.com/watch?v=CLOG7HOlSYc
Was fun to try to make something in such a short time frame - it's a simple arrangement, but each part was pretty tough to get just right! I can think of areas to improve, but I'm pretty happy with this overall as a week-long project.
*These are the composers according to Wikipedia, but I actually couldn't find any citation for that anywhere - not even in the game itself! Would love to know for certain who did all the music in this game, hopefully an OST is released at some point with proper credits.Yoshis Story - Theme Medley (60s Cover)JalopesTL2021-02-08 | Follow me: twitter.com/JalopesTL twitch.tv/jalopestl
This video is the result of what is, without a doubt, the most niche combination of interests I could have conceived: Kazumi Totaka's Yoshi music, and early '60s British pop/rock, in particular the band The Shadows. If you haven't heard of them, they were a massively popular pre-Beatles British rock band known for their extremely melodic instrumental tunes like "Apache", "Dance On", and "Foot Tapper". I got a bit obsessed with them last December, so I thought it'd be fun to do a video game cover as a sort of tribute. I landed on this Yoshi's Story medley (in particular, the version from Super Smash Bros. Melee) as a perfect tune to explore this idea with.
Hope you guys enjoy it - was a lot harder to put together than it sounds! Hopefully my next video won't take quite as long to finish. The Strangest Song in Links AwakeningJalopesTL2020-10-13 | Follow me: twitter.com/JalopesTL twitch.tv/jalopestl _______________
My first attempt at a long-form analytical video, where I take a closer look at one of the more peculiar songs from the Link's Awakening soundtrack and what makes it stand out among the rest of the game's music. I examine the song in the context of both the original GB OST, as well as the re-arranged version on Nintendo Switch. ______________
A final note: there are a few tiny errors/enharmonic inconsistencies in my transcription in the end. Nothing too dramatic, but I did the initial transcription pretty quickly, so a few small things got past revisions. If there's one thing I'd definitely change, it's calling the last chord in the "dissonant alterations" of the string chords an A7b5. While it's true that the voicing has the 7th and b5 of that chord and an A in the bass, the lack of a 3rd makes A7b5 a pretty unconvincing choice of chord name. I think F9/A ultimately makes more sense, even though there's no F in the strings - later on, when the low brass part enters, it puts an F in the lower register, which recontextualizes the string chord as an F9... and that, conveniently, makes more sense as a chord that can functionally return to the home key of G major, being that bVII is a strong substitute for the V chord. Isn't music theory fun?!Links Awakening - Ballad Of The Wind Fish (Bossa Cover)JalopesTL2020-08-12 | Follow me: twitter.com/JalopesTL twitch.tv/jalopestl
I've always wanted to arrange a song in the style of Tom Jobim - he's one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and I just love the lush arrangements on albums like "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". I wrote some pseudo-bossa-style chord changes to this tune a few years ago, so I thought I'd try to do something with them.
Link's Awakening is a top 5 game for me, and even though Ballad Of The Wind Fish has probably been covered thousands of times, I've never heard it done in this style. Such a strange and memorable melody.Wario Land 2 - Underwater Tunnels (Lo-Fi Cover)JalopesTL2020-08-03 | Follow me: twitter.com/JalopesTL twitch.tv/jalopestl
Composed by: Kozue Ishikawa
Needed a change of pace after spending a few months squarely in classic rock/blues mode. Not sure what reminded me of this tune, but it was practically screaming for a mellow lo-fi jazz arrangement. It's all in that arpeggio part, and the serene and mysterious harmony. Never really attempted to make anything like this before, so it was super fun to experiment with!
Wario Land 2 is a wonderful game with a wonderful score. Many of the songs from the soundtrack are rearrangements of the same basic theme, this one included, but it's done so creatively that each one transforms the theme into something totally unique. You could learn a lot about melodic development from studying it, I'd think.I play EVERY Beatles guitar solo!JalopesTL2020-07-26 | (vv TIME STAMPS IN DESCRIPTION BELOW! vv) One of the more ambitious projects I've ever attempted - The Beatles were a formative musical influence on me, and I believe there is much that can be learned from their music. I wanted to see what I might discover by recreating every main guitar solo section from each of their songs and arranging them in chronological order. Turns out quite a bit!
*All music in this video was performed and created from scratch - no original Beatles recordings were used.*
All parts were performed by me except for drums/percussion, which were performed by Evan Chisholm and Rich Degnars (whom this project would not have been possible without!) Evan plays on everything up through Revolver, as well as Hey Bulldog, All You Need Is Love, and most of Let It Be. Rich plays on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album, and Abbey Road, as well as For You Blue off Let It Be.
Also a huge shoutout to Brendan Sheehan and his dad for letting me borrow that amazing Rickenbacker 12 String, as well as Matt Casarino for his acoustic 12 string.

My original plan was for this to be finished two weeks after my last video... but unfortunately, life had other plans, and now it's been more like two months. The one silver lining is this: within all that time, I bought both a chromatic harmonica and an ocarina, two instruments I had never played before but thought would go great in this particular tune. Had to work some production magic to make my clumsy performances on them acceptable, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.
FFIX is my favorite Final Fantasy, and Uematsu was really firing on all cylinders with the game's score. I'm sure I'll return to it someday.Ghost Trick - Missile, A Courageous Little Animal (Cover)JalopesTL2020-01-24 | Follow me: twitter.com/JalopesTL twitch.tv/jalopestl
When a viewer suggested in one of my livestreams that I cover a song from Ghost Trick, this was the first one that came to mind as a good possibility; not only is it the theme song for one of the all time great video game characters, but it fits really nicely with the instrumentation I was looking to experiment with (guitar, steel drum courtesy of DirtiestM, and some basic synth overlays).
Hello! For the longest time, I've wanted to experiment with doing covers of video game tunes on YouTube, ever since first discovering people doing it in the late 2000s. Now, over a decade later, I've finally finished one (well, one with video, at least)!
This was a challenge to myself to see if I could learn, record, and upload a whole cover in one night. No rearranging or improvisation, just as accurate to the original as possible. I have a more complex cover of another song in the works, but I hope you enjoy this short one in the meantime!
More about the song - for some reason, this tune really stuck out to me every time it played during FF8. I think it's the clean electric guitar, which I think is a sort of unusual choice for a PS1-era OST. Also just a very pretty melody, obviously - probably my favorite rendition of "Eyes On Me" in the game.
