The first U-2 spy plane flew at Groom Lake in 1956 during CIA Project Aquatone. On takeoff and landing the pilot of the planes was assisted by personnel following the plane in a high performance automobile. This video credited to Iain Biard is of a modern U-2 over 50 years later taking off at Beale AFB, California. Note that the pilot is still assisted by ground crew in automobiles.
