Lilly SchwartzThis piece is a guided generative ambient performance. I just finished the DIY Eurorack modular synthesizer I'm playing with in this performance to complement my Crave semi-modular and I thought I'd show you what kind of thing I tend to do with it. And of course, by “building” I mean proper Eurorack modular DIY, built from electronics components.

The Neo Trinity is a complex modulation source with 6 channels of LFOs, envelopes or recorded CV and in this video I used it to modulate a drone that would otherwise have been much less interesting. Other elements: Moog Model D iOS App and Ableton Operator processed with different effects.
This is just a little teaser for a more in depth video on the Neo Trinity that will be coming soon.

This isn't strictly a review video, but I actually talk a lot about the lens in this one and what it's like to shoot with it. I also show some of the best pictures I took with it over the spread of 175 rolls of film. From the number of rolls I've taken with it, you can already tell that I really love this lens. Always fun to take it out for a spin because of how quirky and swirly the bokeh is.

It's a very simple project so this is perfect for music DIY beginners. Even if you want to build synthesizers in the end, getting started with guitar pedals is a very good idea and you can plug just about anything into effects pedals, including synths. This is a great pedal to start with and it sounds pretty cool. Bonus: After the full build I also show you how I make ambient music with this pedal, so you can hear it in context too.
All the music in this video involves the Jordan Boss Tone Fuzz in some way. First one includes the Behringer Crave through the Boss Tone, second one has guitar swells run through it and the third a steel tongue drum! Yes, you can just about put anything through guitar pedals, even unusual stuff like that. I love doing that because it always gets me to new musical spaces.

This Fuzz pedal is a really easy build that is great for beginners, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to show you that pedal in particular. It sounds pretty mellow for a Fuzz pedal, so I wanted to put something unusual through it, in this case my steel tongue drum. Taming that wild combination was a bit of a challenge, but I'm happy with how the track came together in the end! And of course a build video for the Boss Tone Fuzz pedal will be coming soon too!

Just before the pandemic started we decided to celebrate this milestone by going to some amazing cliffs for some landscape photography. This video got tremendously delayed by all the mess that followed, but here we are, finally, almost a year later!
This was one of the biggest protests I’ve photographed so far and people protested for higher pensions, better social security and health care. Not even 2 months later the pandemic hit and the underfunded healthcare service was overwhelmed with the whole situation. Already in 2016 there had been protests that addressed the increasing lack of social security, but the protesters were ignored by the government. The devastating consequences during the first wave of the pandemic could have been prevented.

The book I mentioned was: David Graeber - Bullshit Jobs: A Theory (US) amzn.to/2XmKO3u
Public service announcement: Please excuse the background noise and lack of tripod! This was a really unplanned video, we were just hanging out and I filmed the interview portion with the GoPro street photography rig on my Leica 🤷♀️ You can actually thank climate change and fossil fuel for all that noise. It was so incredibly hot that day that we had to struggle to find any shade at all. This was the best we could do to postpone the moment where we inevitably burst into flame! The downside of ensuring our short term survival was background noise. I thought I'd share the video anyway, since I found our conversation very interesting and our survival miraculous! I hope the subtitles help to make the noise less annoying!

It wasn‘t all work and no play though! In between editing I was also playing with tapeloops for making music and hacking a Sony Walkman to be speed adjustable. There were mornings on the beach and we even got to go to a Vivian Maier photography exhibition in the local cultural center. I guess procrastination level 100 was definitely reached at some points, to avoid all that editing, oh boy, so much work! In the end I even had to repair the focus on my Pakon f135+. So, after 15 years of not making music due to major Creative Block I'm finally back where I started! In this video I'll talk to you about creative block and show you my new musical instruments - a Squier Bullet Mustang HH, a cheap Ukelele, an Akai LPK25 midi keyboard and a Novation launch control xl. Yeah, I totally splurged since it isn't every day that one comes back from the musical dead! You also get to hear and see a (studio) performance of my first new track at the end.
*Fun fact* I started the track 7 years ago and never finished it. I only got as far as the base beat before giving up, which must have been about 5mins in. Creative block can be such a pain in the ...!
Also, TLDR review of Epidemic Sound: Generic elevator music. Alright if you have no musical talent and undistinguished musical tastes. Good for boilerplate home shopping style Youtube content, but way too generic for my (crazy) taste in music. The music isn't bad though. Just ... totally unspectacular and one size fits all.

I didn’t only shoot video on this trip: Between street photography with the Leica and some festival impressions with the Rollei I shot 4 rolls and I show you some of those pictures in the video too. By the way, the Film Shooters Collective Show was picked up by a gallery in Cadiz and so my print will be on display this whole month!
Now, here comes the big surprise though, all the music in this video was my own! That’s right, after 15 years of not making any music I’m finally back to my first and most dear obsession. I hope it doesn’t swallow me whole! More about that in the next vlog though! 🎶

*Connect with me* Instagram: instagram.com/lilly.schwartz Twitter: twitter.com/lilschwartzart Facebook: facebook.com/lilschwartzFinished DIY WiFi Arduino darkroom timer and RGB LED light sourceLilly Schwartz2019-06-28 | This time I‘m showing you the finishing stages of my DIY WiFi Arduino darkroom timer and RGB enlarger light source. I tell you all about designing the final PCB board for the project and printing an enclosure for the darkroom timer. The finished project also includes the 3D print of a new enlarger head for my Durst M670 that can take a standard lightbulb. I can interface the timer with a WiFi switch to control my regular Durst heads or a LIFX smart bulb in the 3D printed head that can be controlled via WiFi. The 3D printed head connects to the enlarger via the stock M3 screws.
If you’d like to build an Arduino f-stop timer yourself I suggest you check out Brodie Tyrell’s open hardware and open source project: brodie-tyrrell.org/fstoptimer
Personally I went with my own code, because I couldn’t find the components Brodie used and integrating different components just became too confusing. If you can find his exact components, no programming is necessary, which is the most difficult part. If you want to program it yourself, do yourself a favour and use an Arduino Mega from the start. There are no segmentation fault warnings on Arduinos, so if you run out of memory, it will just do random unpredictable stuff, which is a nightmare to debug. And you definitely will run out of memory on a regular Arduino unless you are a wizard at microcontroller memory management!
If you want to have a go with my WiFi version and need pointers, contact me directly, I still have some PCB boards too. This is NOT an easy build though and the WiFi bits are not exactly straight forward to set up. You’ll probably find Brodie’s version much easier to build and better documented. Blog posts with further information on my build are coming soon though!
Acknowledgements: Thanks to @frak, @196photo and my dad for help along the way! @frak helped with C++ refactoring problems, @196photo prevented the demise of my high power LEDs by pointing out that my LED driver might be unsuitable for them. My dad helped with the earliest stages of the project when I was still trying to figure out RGB strip lights and got a bit stuck with converting from an RGB colour space to RYB colour space. And of course this whole project would have been impossible without the Maker community and open source component libraries for Arduino! Building cool stuff is a community effort! Most importantly: Let’s not forget my husband, who supports me in all my crazy endeavours!

I wanted to try something new for this video to show you a little behind the scenes view into my studio and darkroom.
I'm actually mainly a photographer and only draw and paint on the side. This video features editing pictures for a photography book project, darkroom maintenance, developing some film rolls, drawing one of my animal characters and a hike in the woods with my new Zhiyun Smooth 4 stabiliser. Also, I totally get now why a lot of artists only make these kinds of vlog style videos once a month, they are so much more difficult to edit and organise! Not sure how interesting my photography stuff is for you guys, so let me know what you think in the comments! I actually quite enjoyed the combination! Also, vlogging is hard ...! #believeinfilm
To celebrate this milestone I decided to try something different, namely digital art on my iPad in Procreate! I'm still pretty new to procreate and I wanted to try painting fire with it. Turned out pretty cool I think! And because I like to make things hard for myself the background was constructed in perspective with pretty much all the perspective drawing tricks I know. Only took forever!
Thanks again for all your support, I'm over the moon 🚀 that it took less than 2 months to reach 50 subs! You guys rock!

Bonus tip: I forgot to speak about PAPER because it’s less important than with other media. If in doubt use watercolor paper, but it works on many different types of slightly thicker paper when used more thickly. As always, the thinner the paper, the more warpage you’re going to encounter.
