On 23 September 2025, in eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County, a barrier lake on Maitai’an Creek suddenly overtopped during Typhoon Ragasa collapsing a landslide barrier. The resulting flood swept away bridges, homes, and roads, leaving 19 dead. Three tropical cyclones this season were most responsible for the landslide blocking, the filling and the catastrophic collapse of the lake.
