On this week's Technique Tuesday, Stanford All-American Tyler Knox — one of the best scramblers in the country — breaks down how to score from scrambles. It all runs on one idea: when a guy gets past your head, hands, and sprawl, don't panic. Coast on your head, stay calm, and turn his shot into your offense.
Knox covers three answers for when a guy gets deep on your legs: isolating a foot off the back door to roll through into a low single, a crotch lock roll-through for the tight and strong guy, and trapping the arm to transition off the wrist.
Being hard to score on and scoring back are the same skill.
You'll learn:
- The back-door escape — coast calm on your head, isolate one foot, and roll off while keeping your hips square to the mat
- The armpit detail that frees the leg — plant his foot in your armpit and extend to create distance
- The crotch lock for the strong guy — knee on his head, then lock deep and pull it tight before you roll, not after
- The ankle hook that puts you on top — catch his foot as you roll so you never end up belly-up, then hunt the cradle
- Trapping the arm off the back door — bring both legs to the SAME side, pressure back, and grab the wrist to transition
Scrambling isn't chaos. It's a set of answers you drill until they're automatic.
