Hey creative people! Today I'd like to talk about two very distinctive strategies for an artist to become successful. I was inspired by a recent video from Chinese YouTuber/entrepreneur Li Ziran. In his video, he talked about two kinds of entrepreneurs - the ones who focus on building products and the ones who focus on gaining influence.
----------------------
00:00 - Intro
01:01 - Product strategy
02:03 - Example Leng Jun
03:07 - Influence strategy
04:33 - Example Paris Hilton
04:57 - Product challenge 1 Dependency
05:42 - Product challenge 2 Investment
06:37 - Product challenge 3 Time
07:09 - Product challenge 4 Being unknown
08:14 - Influence challenge 1 Traffic
08:56 - Influence challenge 2 Social media uncertainty
09:31 - Influence challenge 3 Luck
10:08 - Influence challenge 4 Time
11:01 - Counter purpose with the art world
11:49 - Advice 1 technical approach
12:42 - Advice 2 Get in touch
----------------------
I believe there are also two ways of making art business: (1) produce-based strategy and (2) influence-based strategy. The former is more suitable for highly skilled artists who wish to work with institutions in the fine art world. The later is more popular among young artists who are native to digital social media.
Of course, this is just my theory. In the real world, things are more blurred. You can switch between the two or blend them. Let me know your take on this, and your plans in 2021 - how are you going to pursue a career in visual art?

The global art market is evaluated at $64.12 billion in 2019. However, this number isnt quite relevant for 99% of us. The 1% of the world’s population currently holds over 44% of household wealth. In other words, we the 99% are merely splitting what the leftovers. You might want to check out this Vice article The Art World Is Full of Lies, Smuggling, and Financial Hijinks:
