This is a project I have been working on for four months and I am very proud to release it on YouTube!
The McMaster NEUDOSE Satellite team at McMaster University has been working to develop a satellite which is aimed to study space radiation effects while in Low Earth Orbit. During the summer, I (a former NEUDOSE member) began work on produce a launch animation:
I designed a rocket assembly in Solidworks with the following components:
Stage 1, Stage 2, Payload fairing, and the NEUDOSE satellite itself.
These were then imported into MATLAB, and the equations of motion were then applied. The thrust force was imported from an Excel file and a built in Simulink block calculates the drag force (based on altitude).
The following mechanisms are then added:
Stage Seperation
Payload fairing Seperation
Satellite Launch.
NOTE: I am aware that Low Earth Orbit starts from 60 km onwards, and this is only a 40 km orbit. This is because MATLAB imposes limits on the maximum height an object can climb to. As a result, I designed the pitch axis transfer function such that the rocket releases the satellite while travelling approximately straight and level flight.
