Why so much disappointment over the new Apple iPhone event? I think I know. And will it matter to sales of the iPhone 5C and 5S?
CORRECTIONS:
Apple's M7 motion tracking chip is only in the top line iPhone 5S, NOT the 5C. Thanks to John Osborne for spotting the error.
Slo-mo video is cool. But Apple is playing catch up. HTC One has had the feature for months.SEE: youtu.be/fL3MJzHs4Gk

Early reaction to the new iPhones was brutal. I think I know why.
Last week, Apple introduced their new iPhone models. Plural. For the first time this year there were two new lines of iphone,
named 5C and 5S.
Reaction?
Not impressed.
The Onion.
Ouch
Fortune
Ouch
The stock market
Ouch.
Look, there's a lot of merit in the new iPhones. But, apparently, not as much merit as some had hoped for. But that's only part of the problem. I think the bigger problem is that Apple has forgotten a few things that Steve Jobs knew about introducing new products.
Beginning with secrecy. Advance rumors had almost everything right. So, of course, the actual announcement was an anti-climax.
The rumors were wrong about one thing: pricing. The market was hoping for a low-cost iPhone that would break open the Asian markets. But what Apple delivered, was the same pricing tiers they always had. low, medium, high.
At the high end theres there 5S,
Apple made a leap forward in processing power,
jumping to a 64-bit chip called the A7.
Twice as fast as last year.
Moore's law on the march.
It's by far the fastest processor in the smart-phone universe.
So, why has the world gone Meh?
One reason is that competition is heating up.
But I think the core of the problem is that. Apple is losing sight of how to project its je ne sais quoi.
What they're doing is putting a lot more emphasis on talking about design.
You may have seen the Designed in California campaign. It bombed.
Talking too much about design is a trap. A finely honed chamfer is not a reason to upgrade.
The Steve Jobs pitch used to go like this: you know what sucks? people have never been able to do THIS. Or never been able to do it easily. There's something something missing in our lives. Or something sucky in them that we'd love to get rid of.
And he would go on and describe about some hole in the universe that nobody was filling. In many cases, nobody even knew that this hole existed until Steve pointed it out. And then WHOMP. He'd fill it.
Steve knew what the preachers know: You have to paint a picture of hell fire before you offer salvation.
Steve was great at identifying itches that we never knew we had and then offering us the perfect way to scratch them.
Jony Ive, by contrast, only knows one itch.
The desire for a lovely object that just works. Well fine.
But that's not a new itch.
jjjjIt's exactly the same itch he scratched last year and the year before.
Jony Ive can design a great product. But Steve Jobs knew how to sell one.
Mickeleh's take: Apple will have the last laugh this round. Once people get their hands on the iPhone 5S, reality will trump the haters. Watch... Reviews are coming in. They're pretty good.
