Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Idaho National Laboratory are joining forces to strengthen U.S. nuclear manufacturing by advancing wire-arc 3D printing for large industrial pressure vessels.
Researchers are developing ways to print, monitor, and evaluate these critical components in real time, with repeatable results on different machines in different locations.
At DOE’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, ORNL has 3D printed a demonstration pressure vessel using coordinated robotic systems—an important step toward scaling the technology for demanding nuclear applications.
In this project, @IdahoNationalLab will rely in particular on its advanced manufacturing and AI/ML capabilities.
