Light seems simple until experiments force us to look more closely. In some situations, it spreads, overlaps, and interferes like a wave. Two light waves can reinforce each other and become brighter, or partially cancel each other and produce darkness.

Other experiments reveal a very different side of light. Instead of behaving only like a continuous wave, light can transfer energy in distinct packets associated with particles called photons. This strange combination became one of the foundations of quantum physics.

The photoelectric effect provided especially important evidence for the particle-like behavior of light. It also led to a surprising piece of scientific history. Albert Einstein is best known for relativity, but his Nobel Prize recognized his explanation of the photoelectric effect.

Light cannot be described completely using only the familiar ideas of particles or waves. Its behavior depends on how it is observed and what kind of experiment is performed, revealing a universe that does not always follow the categories we use in everyday life.
