What happens when literature’s great wanderer who desperately wants to go home meets literature’s great wanderer who has convinced himself he no longer needs one?
In this Common Room Deep Dive, we return to Chesterton Radio’s original adventure The Nautilus and the Wine-Dark Sea and place it beside the two great works that inspired it: Homer’s Odyssey and Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
Odysseus has spent years trapped upon the sea, enduring monsters, temptation, shipwreck, loss, and even the world of the dead for one reason:
Ithaca.
Captain Nemo has done almost the opposite. He has built perhaps the greatest vessel literature ever imagined, capable of carrying him almost anywhere on earth—and uses it to escape the very idea of home.
One man cannot get home.
The other refuses to have one.
Their meeting opens larger questions than whether the Nautilus could survive Scylla or what Nemo’s instruments would make of the Sirens.
Why is the promise of knowledge particularly dangerous to Captain Nemo?
Can science explain a mystery without exhausting its meaning?
When does freedom become exile?
What is the difference between a voyage and merely leaving?
And why does Odysseus look around Nemo’s magnificent submarine—filled with books, paintings, music, science, craftsmanship, and beauty—and realize something Nemo cannot admit about himself?
The Nautilus is too beautiful for a man who wants nothing.
At the heart of the conversation is a simple contrast.
Odysseus crosses the sea because somewhere beyond it is a shore he calls home.
Nemo crosses the sea because he believes freedom means needing no shore at all.
By the end, Odysseus reaches Ithaca.
Nemo does not reach home.
But perhaps Odysseus has shown him the direction.
