A lot has changed about The Wolf Next Door's animation style since it was first announced. Originally it was going to just be hand-drawn and on twos, then it was going to be a sketchy style done on threes and fours, and then ultimately I realized that was still extremely ambitious and made the decision to scrap my progress for the trailer in order to make it rigged instead. Now that I finally have things figured out I thought it would be fun to redo my initial render tests and see what the final product may look like with rigs!

It's not exactly a fair comparison because the hand drawn ones were extremely rushed and nowhere near my best, but I still thought it would be interesting to look at them both. I did each test in about the same amount of time (under an hour), yet the difference between the new ones and the old ones is insane. I think this really just highlights WHY I made the decision to use rigs instead--it's just SO much faster. As much as I love hand drawn animation, it's undeniable that I would be sacrificing either quality or time when working on a project of this scale. Rigs really are a great compromise here, I can get things done fast that still look pretty decent! And it's much easier to make changes to rigged stuff, whereas revising hand drawn stuff can be a bit trickier.

Just like last time, these new tests aren't fully an accurate representation of what the animation will look like as I still challenged myself to finish them fast, but in this case it's at least a lot closer. I'm considering adding some simple shading as that shouldn't be too difficult, but I'll need to play around with it a little. Maybe I'll share another test in the near future! I think the main difference with these tests is the shadow test--with rigs I think I'll simplify it so the shading when a character walks in or out of a shadow isn't too complex, but it'll depend on the individual scene. I'm still working things out, though.

For those of you who don't know, The Wolf Next Door is an animated mini series about a rebellious teenage girl who runs away from home and makes an unexpected friendship with a talking wolf. The two team up to face hardships and support each other as they search for a place they can call home. Hopefully you guys are looking forward to it!
