In this video, I, Azehara, break down the latest AI art drama on Twitter/X involving an artist named Seiran who refused a commission because the customer used an AI-generated image as a reference. The situation quickly went viral after Seiran allegedly told the commissioner that she would only accept the request if the customer drew the reference image themselves. This sparked massive backlash online, with many people pointing out the absurdity of expecting commissioners who are paying specifically because they can’t draw to create their own reference art before hiring an artist.
I go through some of the reactions from both artists and non-artists, highlighting the growing divide in the online art community regarding AI-assisted workflows. Many people argued that references have always been a normal part of the creative process, and that AI-generated mood boards or concept references are simply another evolution of that idea. Others defended Seiran’s stance, arguing that artists should have the right to reject any project they disagree with. The discussion quickly evolved into a much larger debate about the future of art, commissions, and how creators will adapt to rapidly advancing AI tools.
Finally, I talk about my own experiences using AI-generated images for YouTube thumbnails and even for helping conceptualize my VTuber model before commissioning artists. My conclusion is simple: artists who refuse to work with AI references entirely may eventually struggle to compete in an industry that is rapidly changing. AI isn’t replacing creativity it’s becoming a tool that speeds up ideation, communication, and production. Whether people like it or not, creators and artists alike are going to have to learn how to adapt to AI-assisted workflows or risk being left behind.
