‘i cant wait to enter the Pale Garden!’ the insidious Creaking:
I have to be entirely honest, I think the Pale Gardens have the potential to be a genuine 10 // 10 as far as biomes go. I’ve always liked the Dark Oak forests for being these somewhat uneasy biomes to enter, with the dense clustering of trees providing plenty of shade for mobs to spawn as well as making it decently hard to navigate on the ground. Though, if you clear some trees out, you’ve got plenty of material and space to make a build with phenomenal atmosphere. And the Pale Gardens take this idea up a notch.
I really like this biome. I’m a fan of the brighter wood types, so the moment I saw the Cherry Groves from 1.20 I reserved some chunks in my world to hopefully find one nearby to move to once the update released. But being a year into them, the pink has become a *little* nauseating. I’ve always thought on the idea of moving to a Birch Forest, but it just wasn’t particularly what I wanted. This, however, is.
The Pale Oak is now undoubtedly my favorite wood in the game. Even Cherry wood ranked, like, 4th place when it was added. This one isn’t even close. I’m genuinely so happy that these smaller updates are releasing sooner, because I seriously cannot wait to use the wood for building.
The Pale Moss is cool too, though the hanging moss is really what sells it for me. As far as foliage goes, the only other things I’d really ask for are some flowers and a different tree shape. Of course sticking with a dense tree canopy, but I think something similar to the actual weeping willow tree would be a good fit seeing as they’re inspired by them. I’d personally love a wilting grey rose or something. Anything keeping with the aesthetic of ‘sorta dead sorta alive’ I suppose.
Still, though, I’m just really in love with this biome. It might just be the atmosphere it provides: Eerie and quiet. Both calming and uneasy. And that’s sort of what I tried to go for in this song.
The Pale Gardens actually intentionally don’t play any music, now being the 2nd biome in the game to do this. It’s pretty interesting and does make sense, though I love this biome way too much to not make anything for it.
The first half matches the vibe for the day, and the 2nd half for the night. Any biome gets dangerous at night, but none of them ever really feel ‘eerie’ or ‘wrong’ to me. But the Pale Garden actually succeeds to doing this, mainly thanks to THE CREAKING!!!
I LOVE THE CREAKING!!! CREAKING SWEEP!!! I’m so glad they’ve finally decided to add something like this. Do you have any idea how long this game has been in need of weird forest creatures?
The mechanic is good, with it only able to move when you’re not looking, and not being able to be killed normally. The only thing I’d change about them is really just letting them deal more damage, and maybe some kind of effect. My choices would be Slowness and Blindness personally, making it harder to run away and keep your eyes on them.
The idea of the Creaking Heart and mob itself adds a whole new layer of unease to the biome, because of that whole ‘sorta alive sorta dead’ thing: The whole biome looks and feels super dead during the day, only for the trees to literally come alive at night, alongside all the other undead mobs. I found it really cool learning out that the Creaking Hearts were in the trees themselves, making me wonder what the Creakings really are and how they appear.
I also love the interaction of Illagers running away from Creakings. That’s just a neat little in-universe thing.
Truly, I might just move my base again once I find a good Pale Garden to settle in. Maybe then it’ll be permanent. For once.
Love this biome. Even with its insidious Creaking.
Enjoy!
