Two giant panda cubs born at the Hetaoping Wilderness Training Base in Sichuan, China, have made conservation history. He He (Harmony) and Mei Mei (Beautiful) are the first panda twins born to a captive mother and a wild father.
Arriving on 25 July 2018, He He weighed 215 g (7.6 oz) and Mei Mei just 84 g (3 oz), both tiny compared to their full-grown mother. In fact, giant pandas hold the record for the smallest placental mammal babies relative to adult size.
Named after characters from popular Chinese cartoons, the cubs received their Guinness World Records title in June 2019. Their mother, Cao Cao, a “hero mother” at 17 years old, has given birth to several cubs before, but these twins stand out thanks to their unique half-wild, half-captive heritage.
