After 1950, Engine #12 was the only surviving locomotive to carry the name Tweetsie. After several changes of ownership, Tweetsie was purchased by a Gene Autry for use in the movies. However, Autry resold the locomotive to Grover Robbins of Blowing Rock with the understanding the the locomotive would be restored to operation as an educational and historical attraction.
Grover Robbins had the train restored, and acquired the site between Boone and Blowing Rock as the new location for the railroad. Grover was joined by his brothers Harry and Spencer in the venture, and Tweetsie Railroad opened to the public on July 4, 1957 as a one mile scenic excursion.
In the following years, Tweetsie Railroad expanded to a three mile loop, adopted a wild West format and evolved into one of America's first theme parks.
