A peaceful turtle family lives in a swamp that is suddenly invaded by land‑reclamation machinery. Driven out, they must search for a new home—an odyssey that forces them to crawl across a perilous highway buzzing with cars and cyclists. The entire adventure is shown from a low, “turtle’s‑eye” perspective, so the speeding vehicles loom as faceless, abstract threats while the reptiles’ gentle faces reveal very human emotions.
Turtles was awarded Best Latvian Animated Film at the national Lielais Kristaps awards in 1987, cementing its status as one of Bērziņš’s signature works and an important milestone in Latvian animation history.
