I've been asked why those who turn segmented pieces stagger the joints when gluing the rings together. The main reason is strength. The rings are made up of butt jointed segments. Butt joints are the weakest joint in woodworking. So staggering the joints when gluing the rings together gives you a long grain joint. Long grain joints are very strong.
