Beautiful turnips, but are they good to eat when they get really big? Large root vegetables have a bad name for being tougher and less sweet than when they were smaller. We thought to do a taste test to find out.
We harvested Tokyo Cross F1 turnips, grown no dig here at Homeacres Garden in Somerset, UK. All were multisown on 15 August and transplanted on 29 August, about eight weeks before filming on 24 October.
We cooked them side by side — the small ones whole and the big ones cut into pieces — and to our surprise, the larger turnips tasted slightly sweeter and were just as tender, with a beautiful soft middle and a bit of skin around the edge.
So don’t be afraid of your roots getting large like this — they can still be delicious and full of flavour.
Tokyo Cross F1 is a really good turnip for early spring and autumn, fast growing, firm textured and with a rich flavour.
