The defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I in 1918 led to its final dissolution, shifting from empire to
republic a few years later. This transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey was largely
influenced by European colonial powers, including British and French occupation of the capital city, Istanbul.
