Ken distinguishes the “ultimate” states from gross/subtle/causal by a single defining feature: they don’t come and go. They’re always already present in everyone’s awareness, even if we don’t notice them. The first of these is Turiya—literally “the fourth”—named simply because it’s beyond the usual three-state cycle of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Turiya is described as pure consciousness itself: the witnessing awareness in which all experiences arise. It’s not a particular sensation, thought, or vision; it’s the capacity to know whatever appears. In its clearest expression, it can be experienced as radically formless awareness—consciousness without an object—present through every state, including sleep.
