Belgium is home to the famous Athus-Meuse-Railway-Line, which stretches across the Ardennes. The double-track railway line connects numerous towns and enables rail traffic between Belgium and France and between Belgium and Luxembourg. One of the towns located on this railway line is Houyet en Ardenne. Houyet is a municipality of Wallonia in the province of Namur, Belgium. The model railway club “Modelspoorclub De Dwarsliggers” has constructed a beautiful model railway layout on a scale of 1/120 (TT Scale), which depicts Houyet train station in 1956.
The 1950s and 1960s represent the golden age of railways, when steam locomotives were still regularly used to pull heavy freight trains. In addition to steam trains, diesel locomotives were also used at that time, which can also be seen in this miniature world. Furthermore, the model railroad layout depicts the famous Thanville railway viaduct. The Thanville viaduct is a brick arch bridge near Pondrôme and was built in 1898-1899. In reality, the railway bridge is 300 meters long, with 14 spans.
The model train layout depicts many details from the railway era of the past. The landscape in the foreground harmonizes perfectly with the background wall, which represents the mountainous landscape of the Ardennes. Selected rail vehicles, that were used for freight and passenger train transport in Belgium during the railway era in the 1950s and 1960s, are also used on the tracks in this miniature world.
