In the Kalahari Desert flatlands, 40 km southwest of the Okavango River, erupts the quartzite rock formation of the Tsodilo hills. The hills reveal Botswana’s cultural and spiritual heritage and carry an aura of mystery and intrigue. Tsodilo hills are believed to have been inhabited by people for the past 100 000 years. A unique feature of the hills is rock paintings of the San, and some Bantu people groups. The San are the oldest modern-day inhabitants of the hills followed by the Hambukushu for the past 200 years. Most of the paintings are attributed to the San people or Basarwa as they are locally called. They sort refuge in the hills to escape the harshness of the desert. The villages of the San and Hambukushu are located near the Tsodilo hills.

The San were hunter-gatherers that occasionally owned sheep and cattle. Some San groups used spears and others used bows and arrows for hunting and ate fish. The Hambukushu were metal workers who kept animals, hunted, fished, collected wild food, and grew crops.

In this video, we take you on a journey to visit the Tsodilo Hills and discover its beauty.
