Conservation genetics is an interdisciplinary field that aims to understand the dynamics of genes in a population for the purpose of natural resource management, conservation of genetic diversity, and the prevention of species extinction. The tools and methods applied answer questions such as: Where do species occur? How many populations of a certain species exist? What is the genetic diversity between and within populations? What are the boundaries of each population? Is hybridization between species occurring? Come learn about the important research being done to answer these questions!
About the presenter:
Dr. Heather Evans is the Conservation Genetics Manager for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. She uses applied genetics to conserve and manage populations within the state. Her work involves population genetics to describe biodiversity within and between populations, analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect target species from water samples, parentage-based tagging to evaluate the success of fish hatchery efforts, and forensic analysis to aid law enforcement in protecting our natural resources.
