It's tempting to focus on keeping the character perfectly on model from the start. But when you are conveying weight shifting, it’s best to pay attention to the movement first. Look at the effort, balance, timing, and body mechanics that go into the movement's inertia to make the action feel believable.
That's why many animators begin with a rough pass focused entirely on the performance. The goal is to solve the motion before worrying about refining the drawings. Once the lift feels heavy and the mechanics are working, the character can be brought back on model during later passes.
