Buehlman creates a fresh story with The Blacktongue Thief, influenced by his background in historical fiction. The first-person narrative, centered on a witty, self-deprecating character, has loads of humor that blends well with the story. It's not a comedy, but the book balances moments of humor with genuine emotion and darker themes, and Buehlmandoes a great job switching between the tones. The book leans toward soft magic, and its exactly what I needed to pull my out of my fantasy slump. NO SPOILERS.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.
