A lecture by Jonas Ivarsson, professor of informatics: The general topic concerns the emotional responses following technologies becoming increasingly life-like, as with interactive agents mimicking certain human qualities. Beginning with the early history of psychology and a discussion about the uncanny the discussion touches on concepts like the uncanny valley, the Turing test and early attempts at human-computer communication. The affective states generated by seemingly incompetent interlocutors are then put into a social perspective. Through the lens of social phenomenology and ethnomethodology, these responses can be understood in relation to how we shape our sense of reality through our everyday interactions. From this background, the new interactive technologies and AI systems can be seen in a new light. It is proposed that if such systems are designed without proper consideration, new uncertainties could be introduced in social relations, effectively feeding suspicion and undermining trust.
