According to a new report, a new alliance is forming between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Somalia’s al-Shabaab, and that is raising alarm in Washington.
An arms broker named Jibril 'One-Armed' Yahya Ali reportedly helped establish weapons and training links between al-Qaeda and the Houthis.
Al-Shabaab fighters reportedly travelled to Yemen for training, while Houthis are trying to establish a foothold overlooking the Gulf of Aden.
If these reports are true, then the partnership could give both groups access to more advanced weapons, drones and maritime surveillance capabilities and threaten one of the world’s critical shipping routes at a time of heightened instability in West Asia.
