In October 1798, George Washington (already out of office) replied to Reverend G.W. Snyder, who had sent him a book warning that the Illuminati were infiltrating American Freemasonry. Washington clarified that he did not doubt Illuminati doctrines had spread in the United States, but he did not believe American Masonic lodges, as societies, had propagated them.
It is one of the more famous founding-father "conspiracy" letters. Washington is usually who people mean when they say "the first president to mention the Illuminati" though technically he had already left office by then.
