About the excerpt: This comes from Astor Piazzolla’s composition, “Contrabajissimo”, although it sounds more like it’d be from a Jazz composer. The use of 4ths and chromatic approach notes is Bebop language for sure.
Piazzolla grew up in Brooklyn and listened to a lot of Jazz, plus he studied Classical music, and ingeniously melded them both with Tango to create a new type of music altogether called, “Nuevo Tango”.
This excerpt is the best example I know of that that directly reflects Piazzolla’s love for the language and phrasing of Bebop.
Soon you’ll be able to hear the entire performance of my arrangement, “Adios Nonino / Contrabajissimo” being played with Hercules Brass, joined by special guests, Boston Brass! #shorts
