From The AP:
The former fire chief who was killed at a Pennsylvania rally for Donald Trump spent his final moments diving in front of his family to protect them from gunfire that rang out Saturday during an assassination attempt against the former president.
"I just wish it didn't happen I just can't believe it happened. Truly a good God fearing hard working man. Loved his family. This is the last thing that this man ever deserved," said Lieutenant and fellow volunteer firefighter, Craig Cirrincione, of the late Corey Comperatore.
Cirrincione said that serving the community came naturally to Comperatore.
The former president was showing off a chart of border-crossing numbers when at least five shots were fired.
Trump was seen holding his ear and got down on the ground. Agents quickly created a shield around him. When he stood, his face bloodied, he pumped his fist to cheering supporters
"Last night around 10 o'clock or so I received a messaged from some of the people at church and everything, they send out a message saying that he was killed," said Cirrincione. "It was just a whirlwind of just feelings rushing over me of not knowing what was going on."
At least two other people were injured during the attempt to kill Trump at Saturday's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
"Major loss. He's a man that would give the shirt of his back to anyone," said Cirrincione. "In his last moments he was shielding his family from the gunfire. Even if that was just a random civilian beside him he would have done the same thing. He was a man that just wanted to protect and serve and love. He was truly a man of love."
Cirrincione was also Comperatore's fellow church member, meeting him when he was just a young boy.
A GoFundMe launched to support Comperatore’s family had already surpassed more than $180,000 in donations as of Sunday.
