Tropospheric propagation is a weather-driven phenomenon where temperature inversions and humidity gradients in the lower atmosphere refract VHF, UHF, and microwave signals, allowing them to travel hundreds or thousands of miles beyond the horizon.

-Mechanisms: Signals are often trapped in surface, elevated, or evaporation ducts that act like a waveguide.
-Best Practices: Long-distance work typically requires horizontal polarization to reduce noise and match atmospheric geometry, along with high-gain Yagi antennas.
-Monitoring: Success depends on tracking Hepburn maps, real-time APRS propagation maps, and stable high-pressure weather systems.
-Scientific Debate: While the "duct" model is traditional, some researchers propose chordal scattering—scattering from turbulent air pockets along weather fronts—as a more plausible explanation for extreme distances.
