The Costa Tropical in Andalusia and the Axarquía region in Malaga province have abandoned traditional olive cultivation, opting instead for tropical fruits. A golden goose for farmers that puts a serious strain on the already scarce water resources in these arid regions. Alongside passion fruit, papaya, dragon fruit, and starfruit, it's mainly mangoes and avocados that soak up water through massive irrigation. Some unscrupulous producers have illegally tapped into groundwater reserves. In the face of climate change, how could these intensive farming practices be changed for more sustainability?
