We’re checking in on this very odd and likely record breaking tropical cyclone in the Solomon Sea.
This is Tropical Cyclone Maila, now a weakening storm, looking a bit of a mess but this has been a remarkable storm having been stuck for days in the same region. Early in April it attempted to form an eye on some occasions with little sustained success until on 7 April it rapidly intensified and after doing so may have become the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Solomon Sea. This storm has been extremely hard to predict due to compounding factors including weak steering, ocean surface cooling from the storm, the complicated geography, and maybe a lack of good observations in the region.
