Long ago the [several] elements lived together in harmony, but then everything changed with the invention of the electron tunneling microscope. Only the fantasy author, master of drawing on aesthetically pleasing historical concepts despite their shaky and outmoded foundations, could keep the magic of the elemental worldbuilding alive. And when the world needed them most, they kinda killed it!
