I have been meaning to try this one for over a decade, and turning 60 in a week, it seems time is running out. I put some hard thought into who I would ask to join me and realized at this point in the game, there is but one guy in my circle, who has a similar outlook of the Gabriels and the treasures hidden within. So, here is our outcome.
Like you may have read or heard before, it's NOT the destination, so much, as the journey and the company along the way. I, consider myself, one of the most successful miners, that ever searched for riches in these mountains, I have found much.
There is a quote from one of my favorite movies and it, if you read it and think about it, kind of puts things into perspective.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. (my friends and family)
I am haunted by waters (memories).
As I walk these trails, each set of rocks, bend in a creek, fallen tree, they all hold some kind of flash back and many times a voice, memmory of laughter. It is a constant slide show of my lifetime.
Many of my ol friends are gone, but they live on here! and always will, just as when I pass, I figure, I have left some sort of footprint others will follow and visit time to time. Perhaps one day 20 years from now, my three-year-old grandson Issac will come across my videos and pick up the copy of 100 hikes in the Angels, I will leave for him, and his grand journey of discovery will alter his life. Perhaps it will take him down the same trails and canyons in between, he may even find some of the hidden treasures and gold I have left behind. One never knows.
The number of things I have seen and done; wow, what a ride it's been!
The bottom line, we were running short of time, energy was low and above all, water was short. THIS is how terrible things happen. I stand by my decision to call it. To continue would put my friend's life on the line and possibly mine. I have been stung by scorpions, bitten by rattlers, (twice), but to run out of water on a trek, like I have with 2 friends, it was a situation, I really thought we were all going to die.
It sticks with you, no matter how much time goes by, you never forget the feeling.
