Oceans Above, Stars Below is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian band Triosphere, scheduled for release on August 28, 2026, via Frontiers Music Srl. It marks the group's first full-length release in about 12 years (since 2014's The Heart of the Matter).
Hailing from Trondheim, Triosphere was formed in 2004 by vocalist/bassist Ida Haukland and guitarist Marius “Silver” Bergesen. The current lineup is rounded out by second guitarist Tor Ole Byberg and drummer Kenneth Tårneby. The band’s sound blends heavy metal, elements of power metal (memorable melodies and choruses), progressive metal, and touches of thrash and hard rock, emphasizing strong melodies, engaging guitar work, and honest, impactful songs that range from heavy to mellow.
The band described the process as “a long, loooong journey.” They had planned to begin recording around 2020, but the pandemic and other factors—including the arrival of new family members—delayed everything. Drum and vocal tracking took place at Fascination Street Studios (Sweden) with engineer/producer Alexander Backlund, while mixing was handled by the legendary Jens Bogren at the same studio. Bass and other parts were recorded in home studios. According to the band, the result has elevated their sound quality to a new level.
The cover art was created by Giannis Nakos (Remedy Art Design), based on discussions regarding the album's title and lyrics, resulting in an intriguing and eye-catching image.
The title draws inspiration from a phrase in Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher book series: the idea of mistaking stars reflected in a lake at night for those in the sky. Ida Haukland connects this concept to water—a recurring theme in her lyrics concerning the inner life, the soul, and the heart—and to the notion of things being inverted or different from expectations, whether in the emotional realm or the outside world. It is about navigating these situations, finding opportunities, or facing challenges.
Lyrically, the album delves into themes of humanity’s self-destructive nature, tyranny (the tyrant that exists within us all), echo chambers that justify cruelty or blindness to monstrosities, and the need to leave the past behind without remaining anchored to it. Singles such as “Of Tyrants” and “Monster’s Ball” explore a history of humanity scarred by tyrant-led destruction and the concept of the “Monster’s Ball”—the condemned’s final party before execution—as a metaphor for the justification of cruelty. “Shorelines” speaks to what is left behind, lessons learned, and the freedom to start anew in the present.
