Europe's undersea cables carry 95% of global internet traffic. They can also listen. Trinity researchers are using them to detect who is in our waters, boosting our security.

Professor in Computer Science and Statistics, Marco Ruffini and Associate Professor in Vibrations, Acoustics and Dynamics, John Kennedy are the Principal Investigators of the Sea Scan project. The project forms part of the work of the ADAPT Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology and recently won the Maritime Situational Awareness Challenge. Through Sea-Scan, they aim to deploy acoustic sensors across existing subsea fibre-optic cables to create a large-scale, 24/7 autonomous monitoring system with an early warning system, ultimately strengthen Ireland and Europe’s maritime security.
