SadisticMystic | TrickStyle - UK Boss Race (Stuntbowl) - 0:03.65 @sadisticmystic | Uploaded September 2008 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
Like the other boss races, the Stuntbowl takes a bit of a break from normal racing, to be more reminiscent of the challenges. In this case, the level ends as soon as you get 15000 points.
Thanks to the "TRAVOLTA" in-game passcode, it's possible to do Insanity Flips (worth 5000 each) at any time. However, you have to land the move, and Insanity Flip takes a very long time to do. Even one repetition will take about as long as the 3.65 seconds I get for a level clear here. So what's going on?
The big trick (useful anywhere you want to rack up score) is that by holding L and then pressing X and A in succession, you'll start the Insanity Flip and then cancel it into a Gyro--but the points for the flip still count! So long as you got enough air on the jump to avoid bailing out of the gyro, this is a quick and repeatable 5800 points. But that takes too long--the second and third flip cancels can be linked up into the same jump by moving forward and dropping down into the bowl. You want to land as close to the side of the bowl as you can while still completing the tricks first, as it means you hit the ground for victory that much sooner, and with times this low, every frame counts.
This is one of only two races in the game that doesn't show the full subsecond timer on screen (the other being the USA boss race, which doesn't really count for anything since that one's always play-until-time-expires). All it shows is the green "time remaining" figure, but of course the subseconds are saved so I show that this is indeed a 3.65 by loading the records list both before (showing an old 3.79) and after the completion.
