This sad sight is the bark on the trunk of a perry pear tree (Blakeney Red) which developed a fungal infection during the awfully wet 2012. The tree guard was one of those corrugated plastic ones. we have had a few deer into the orchard and I was concerned to protect the trunk from herbivores, a fruit tree nearby was destroyed by deer damage. However the guard evidently produced a chronically damp atmosphere and when I removed it the whole of the bark was diseased.
Its too late for this tree. It is sending up a lively shoot from below the disease, so I will cut it down and hope the re-growth will be healthy.
