Metabolic Mind | Treating Insulin Resistance with Metformin in Bipolar Disorder - Cindy Calkin, MD @metabolicmind | Uploaded December 2022 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
In a groundbreaking trial, Dr. Cindy Calkin and colleagues demonstrated how Metformin, a diabetes medication, significantly improved treatment resistant bipolar disorder. Before and after images of the blood brain barrier suggest a mechanism of action of improved insulin resistance in this patient population, adding further evidence of the metabolic underpinnings of mental illness.
Dr. Calkin is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. The results of this study further supports the notion that metabolic therapies can improve symptoms of severe mental illness.
